Attend Co-working Spaces

Co-working spaces are a great place to meet other Digital Nomads in the same situation as you. Cities such as Bali, Lisbon and Medellin are especially great for these, with great internet connections and thriving communities. Many of these spaces often host networking events, workshops, and community lunches, allowing you to connect over work and shared experiences with fellow likeminded individuals.

Take Local Classes

Local classes, be it cooking, languages, skills or dance, are a fabulous way to connect with locals! And not only are they a great way to socialise and make friends, they are also a perfect way to immerse yourself in the local culture of your new home! You might also meet fellow travellers, especially in cooking and language classes.

Volunteer

Getting involved in local volunteering activities, such as teaching English or participating in environmental projects, is a fantastic way to meet locals and other travellers with a passion for giving back. Shared values often lead to building stronger, more meaningful friendships, and when you have things in common with the people you connect with, you will have more shared interests for days out and activities to do together.

Use Social Media Groups

There are so many social media groups these days, specifically aimed at travellers and digital nomads in specific countries or cities. They often feature meetups, events, or just casual gatherings and posting in these groups can help you find friends even before arriving to your new destination. These groups are especially good for people who get nervous outright talking to people, as you can connect with them before you meet to avoid any awkwardness.

Join Tours or Day Trips

Day trips on your days off are a great way to see your new destination AND meet new people at the same time. These are especially good if you're a little new to the solo digital nomad life, and a great way to dive into a new country without the hassle of having to plan transportation or routes yourself. You can use sites like Viator or get-your-guide, or check around in the local area/hostels to find trips to jump on. You'll meet holiday makers, travellers, and maybe even other digital nomads.

Be Open and Approachable!

Make sure you are approachable to others! Smile at people, hang round in cafes and co-working spaces, have open body language - a friendly face and an open attitude go a long way. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation, ask for recommendations, or offer to join others. People are generally more receptive to meeting others while travelling, so what are you waiting for? Go say hi!

Attend Expat Events

These are great for connecting with both other foreigners and locals in your home of choice. Many cities, especially in popular digital nomad destinations, host events specifically for expats there. These gatherings often include networking events, cultural nights, and casual meetups, providing the perfect setting to meet people navigating a new country just like you. You can make friends as well as sharing tips on how to navigate your new destination.
